Project requirements | The Greenwich Millennium Village is part of the remarkable Thames Gateway regeneration project. The project is an ambitious mixed-use development, where innovation and efficiency are fundamental. As this project was the first of the Government’s Millennium Communities, the clients wanted materials with green credentials to construct an environmentally sustainable village. |
Solution | The GMV is part of the Government's Millennium Communities Programme, designed to show how to build sustainable, environmentally responsible communities for the 21st Century. Rationel supplied a selection of design types and micro-porous paint finishes meeting the project’s eco-requirements – double entrance doors, side hung, sidelight and fixed light showcasing the flexibility of our products. Prefabricated construction techniques were employed throughout the project to deliver rapid construction and quality, striving towards a culture of zero-defects. Rationel’s involvement with this project and commitment to using natural resources made it easier to design a visually attractive ecological building, thus satisfying the client’s needs. |
Benefits | GMV has been designed to meet the needs of the 21st century with flexibility and adaptability in mind. Rationel’s high performance timber windows and doors combined with good aesthetics and thermal ratings exceeded the target expectations with an eco friendly approach to design. Rationel’s flexible product range reduced the need for artificial lighting, reducing running costs as a result. The products offered high levels of insulation and air-tightness, and are made from environmentally friendly materials. Furthermore, they have excellent thermal ratings, reducing energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions. This new architectural design provides 372 innovative new homes built on the principle of the traditional London square to create a lively, healthy and secure environment. The project was required to meet stringent environmental targets, including reductions in both primary and embodied energy of 30% and 50% respectively, and construction waste by up to 50%. |
