Project requirements | Very demanding specifications requiring the highest levels of skill and ingenuity for the manufacture of all the windows, doors and staircases to match the style of an American 18th-century timber-framed and clapboard house. |
Solution | Paired bays of box sash windows and an unusual cupola feature designed to complement the decorative pilasters. - a decompression chamber under the bottom sash to prevent rain being blown past the weatherseals in severe weather conditions. - traditional angled meeting rails which improve the sealing between the two sashes. These meeting rails are machined out of solid rather than the cheaper method of joining two sections, thereby making a stronger rail which is less prone to failure. - we use traditional weights and pulleys for the majority of our box sash windows. While more expensive than plastic spiral balances, they are far more attractive and longer lasting. If the mechanisms do need maintenance, it is far easier to carry out on weights and pulleys. Spiral balances wear quite quickly and have to be replaced as pairs. If the rating numbers have been painted over, or were never present, the window has to be dismantled, and the sashes weighed before the correct new balances are sourced – far more difficult than simply replacing a sash cord! - the sashes are constructed with wedged mortice and tenon joints which are more secure than the more common open finger joints. The joints do not therefore need to be nailed or dowelled while the glue sets, and retain their integrity even with extreme neglect. - all external profiles and edges are given a minimum radius of 2mm. This avoids the problem of the paint film thinning on sharp edges and the consequent premature failure of the coating. We normally fully factory finish external joinery in three coats of microporous paint. The controlled conditions under which this is applied give us the ability to guarantee the paint film for eight years. - Clifton Joinery has very flexible manufacturing facilities which allow us to accommodate variations in clients’ preferences such as moulding details, sightlines or profiles. - we only use ironmongery from suppliers who can give us a ten year guarantee, ensuring peace of mind for our clients. When the above features were teamed up with Clifton Joinery’s skill base and attention to detail, the result was joinery that was pleasing to the eye and performed superbly, and a very happy client! |
