St Vincent Street by Mumford & Wood Limited

Name of project

St Vincent Street

Manufacturer

Mumford & Wood Limited

Location

Glasgow, Scotland

Project requirements

The complete renovation of Grade A office accommodation, consisting of a retained B-listed Georgian-style façade constructed in the mid 19th Century, necessitated replacement of single glazed windows but the local authority and Historic Scotland would not approve the use of a double glazed replacement, citing the prohibitive width of astragals as unacceptable.

Solution

To overcome this objection Mumford & Wood designed a double glazed timber product with infinitely slim, elegant 17mm glazing bars to replicate the original windows in every detail and submitted working samples.

Benefits

Final acceptance of the visual appearance of the d/g windows combined the benefit of high performance, modern and thermally efficient timber windows with classic aesthetics.

Client feedback

“These extremely large windows are positioned in an internal curved stone reveal which meant that a traditional square English box detail could not be used.  Mumford & Wood’s technical team designed a double glazed version of the Scottish detail which has an open box section.  Simultaneously, they have recreated fine sight lines that replicate their single glazed predecessors while still incorporating double glazed units and weather-strip to satisfy our sustainability brief,” says Brian Taylor, project architect,  D Lodge Architects.
