Project requirements

A full range of doors and windows were required as part of the transformation of this old garage into a £2 million, 30-bed residential care home for severely mentally and physically disabled young people. Three separate units were constructed consisting of 1-6 bed units and 2-12 bed units, along with kitchen, dining areas and communal lounges. They had to be suitable for wheelchair access.

West Port supplied extra wide doors with low thresholds for wheelchair and wheeled bed access. The doors were provided with a special three point locking mechanism to enable the
residents to open the door from the inside even when locked, to ensure safe escape from the building in an emergency.

The bright colours of the windows and doors add a cheerful touch, while the low windows and special doors mean residents can enjoy the views from their beds and enjoy time in the gardens.
